Grand Prairie Historical Society Meets
The GPHS had its annual potluck supper on April 16, at the Gillett Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Members and guests enjoyed fried chicken and all the fixings. After the meal, all were welcomed b y Vice-President Laura Beth Place. She introduced Dr. Matthew Rooney, Research Station Archeologist and Asst. Professor of Anthropology at University of Arkansas-Monticello.
Dr. Rooney was born in California, received his PhD from the University of Florida and was chosen to be a member of Arkansas’ “Archeological Survey” which brought him to the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
Bohnert asked Dr. Rooney to tell her a couple of outstanding days in his life.
Rooney gave a slide show of some of the work the AAS has done over the last five years. It included the Southeast side of the Arkansas river, Lake Sarassa, near Grady, Arkansas, how to clean recovered iron objects, why so many iron chains were found.
After Dr. Rooney’s presentation a short meeting was held, Museum reports, announcements were made, unfinished business discussed and an update on our President’s health. Glenn (Mosenthein) is doing well and looking forward to coming home soon.
