From Candy to Community: The Evolution of a Tradition That Now Unites a City

What began as a simple act of giving has grown into one of the most meaningful community gatherings in Stuttgart.
From the open, welcoming grounds of Dr. J. B. Bryant Park, the Releford Funeral Home Annual Easter Egg Hunt now stands as a powerful reflection of unity, service, and shared purpose, touching lives far beyond a single day of celebration.
This event was first envisioned by Mr. Booker T. Releford At its inception, it was modest and rooted in a desire to create joy for children and bring families together in a positive space. There were fewer eggs, fewer volunteers, and fewer moving parts. But even then, the heart behind it was clear: this was never just about candy. It was about connection.
Over the years, that vision did not fade-it expanded.
Today, under the leadership of Shelly Owens and Booker Johnson, co-owners of Releford Funeral Home, the Easter Egg Hunt has evolved into a massive community-wide program that brings together hundreds of children, ages one through eleven, along with their parents, grandparents, and extended families.
What once started small has become a living example of what happens when a community commits to growing something with intention.
This event now embraces all ethnicities, all cultures, all backgrounds, creating a space where differences are not highlighted, but harmonized. For a few hours, barriers that often divide communities quietly disappear. In their place, something stronger emerges: shared laughter, shared moments, and shared humanity.
The presence of community leadership has played a vital role in that transformation. Alongside Owens and Johnson, leaders such as Councilman Teddy Holt and many others have supported and strengthened the vision—helping build not just an event, but a bridge.
A bridge across generations.
A bridge across cultural lines.
A bridge across life experiences.
And that bridge is built on service.
Dozens of volunteers give their time year after year—preparing thousands of candy-filled bags, organizing activities, setting up, and ensuring every child is seen, included, and cared for. Their efforts are not casual; they are intentional acts of love.
Partnerships have also expanded the reach and impact. Local firefighters contribute by assembling bicycles that become treasured gifts. Community organizations step in to help prepare materials and manage logistics. Law enforcement, including the Stuttgart Police Department, ensures that safety remains a top priority—creating an environment where families can relax, trust, and fully enjoy the experience.
The result is something far greater than a seasonal activity.
It is a safe, loving, and structured environment where children are free to be children while running, laughing, discovering, and celebrating without fear. It is a place where parents can pause, breathe, and witness joy in its purest form.
And it is a reminder that community still works when people show up for one another.
The impact of this event cannot be measured solely in the number of eggs collected or prizes given. Its true value lies in what it creates internally.
Children leave happier, not just because of what they received, but because of how they felt.
Seen.
Celebrated.
Included.
Those feelings matter. They shape confidence. They influence outlook. They contribute to how a child sees their place in the world.
Moments like these help make futures brighter.
Because when a child grows up in a community where they feel valued, they carry that belief forward. They become more hopeful, more engaged, and more connected.
And that is how legacy is built.
The Releford Funeral Home Annual Easter Egg Hunt is no longer just an event, it has become -a movement of compassion, consistency, and community commitment.
It honors its roots in the vision of Mr. Booker T. Releford, while continuing to grow through the leadership and dedication of those who have carried it forward.
It proves that when people come together across every line that could divide them, they can create something that unites, uplifts, and endures.
This is more than candy.
This is more than a gathering.
This is community in its truest form, alive, active, and making a difference that will be felt for generations to come.
